A Epidermiolisis Bullosa (EB) patient must pay even 30 thousand pesos per month to treat this disease — also called “butterfly skin” syndrome — with which he must learn to live.

And the Mexican Debra Fundraiser — besides putting the disease on the map and carrying out an investigation in the subject — is a non-profit organization that seeks to ameliorate the life quality of people with EB. It currently assists around 350 patients from different states in Mexico.

The Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon — with “Tigres al rescate” — seeks to raise funds next November 27th, when this students´ event takes place at the “Gaspar Mass” stadium. Those who buy their little stuffed tiger — 50 pesos each — will have the opportunity of receiving a brand new car and nine extra prices.

SUPPORT TO DEBRA FUNDRAISER

Once again, the Leading Academic Institution’s authorities, headed by Doctor Jesus Ancer Rodriguez, call upon the community to add up to the Debra Fundraiser cause and to partake in “Tigres al rescate” in order to help these “butterfly skin” patients.

“The University will grant us resources that will be used as donations in order to help them live. This includes dental health, psychological treatment, special medicines, rehabilitation treatments, hand surgery, and even the orthopedic devices acquisition for them to walk better,” pointed out Doctor Julio Salas, Head of Debra.

The EB patients´ skin is quite sensitive, for they lack of ‘adhesives’ to stick the tissues together under the skin. Therefore, with any psychical contact, hug, or friction they experience blisters, even on the mouth and eyes. So to say, they live burnt up; they go to bed with blisters and wake up with blisters. Besides the pain, it is incurable and genetic.

Doctor Jesus Ancer Rodriguez — UANL´s President — mentioned that this event is completely organized by students and that an agreement was previously signed between both institutions, as well as a series of events to raise funds for such organization.

“The goal is to exceed the amount of 1 million 056 thousand pesos that were amassed last year for the “Destellos de luz” association. It is quite important for us to keep this program alive through the University Matters Department, for it is one of the University’s most important functions as social responsibility,” said the Ancer Rodriguez.

He added that this type of events foster the associations strengthening. They also promote and raise the community´s awareness on the needs of the patients which are being assisted.

“This program is part of the UANL 2012 Vision, in which we visualize the University in the future in national and international terms, but never putting the values aside. And for us, this extension to the community is important, for the student, in his upbringing, to include bases that take social duties into account, and which strengthen through institutions such us the University,“ expressed the Head of our Leading Academic Institution.

Epidermiolisis Bullosa (EB) is not a well-known disease, for those who suffer from it live in isolation. But Debra Fundraiser supports around 350 families from different states in Mexico. It is estimated that there are around seven to 10 thousand patients in the country and half a million in the world.
